To reduce bacterial growth, change the water in the bouquet every two or three days with lukewarm water and repeat every two or three days. During this process trim the stems.
(Not only can bacteria block stems and hinder them from properly absorbing water, but it may also make the entire bouquet smell bad.)
When you change the water in the bouquet, cut all of the stems to at least 1 1/2 - 2 inches in length and repeat every two or three days.
The surface area accessible for absorption is increased by cutting the stems at a diagonal angle.
Fresh cut flowers last longer in cooler temperatures. so keep them away from direct sunlight, heat, away from drafts (direct airflow from windows/vent) and away from developing fruit as it "may potentially release ethylene gas, which would shorten the lifetime of the flowers."
